1st Semifinal Recap

July 06, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Holland v Uruguay FIFA World Cup Semi Final - South Africa 2010 - Green Point Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa - 6/7/10..Giovanni van Bronckhorst (R) celebrates after scoring Holland's first goal.

Uruguay 2 – Netherlands 3

Once more, Netherlands proves that 3 >2. Uruguay’s 4-4-2 did as good a job as possible shutting down the Dutch 4-2-3-1, but ultimately Netherland’s trident of center midfielders outdid Uruguay’s duo. Surprisingly, it was a right back that first broke through either defense. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s stunning 18th minute shot left goalkeeper Fernando Muslera helpless, though the South Americans responded by controlling the latter stages of the first half and even earned an equalizer in the 41st when Diego Forlan sent Maarten Stekelenburg the wrong way.

A halftime substitution – Rafael Van der Vaart for Demy De Zeeuw – helped the Dutch regain control of possession, and they were rewarded with two goals (Wesley Sneijer 70th and Arjen Robben 73rd). Sneijder’s tally benefited from a missed offside call on a Robin Van Persie dummy, but the third Dutch goal was well-taken, with Robben guiding in a Dirk Kuyt cross.

Maxi Pereira gave Holland a late scare after his 92nd minute goal, but the Dutch held on despite a few dicey moments late in stoppage time.

Netherlands now await the winner of tomorrow’s 2nd semifinal, Spain-Germany.

didn’t look offsides to me. isn’t it the torso of the offensive player needs to be in line with the feet of the defensive player?

      I don’t think it’s quite that specific.

From the Laws of the Game:
A player is in an offside position if:
      • he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
      second-last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:
      • he is in his own half of the field of play or
      • he is level with the second-last opponent or
      • he is level with the last two opponents
