2nd Semifinal Recap

July 03, 2010 - Johannesburg, South Africa - epa02235727 Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque during the FIFA World Cup 2010 quarter final match between Paraguay and Spain at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, 03 July 2010.

Spain 1 – Germany 0

Over the weekend, FFG suggested that Spain could benefit by brining on a traditional winger instead of a central midfielder. Vicente del Bosque did start Barcelona’s winger Pedro, but at the expense of striker Fernando Torres. Regardless of the change, the match proceeded in a traditional Spanish manner: they played keep away and prevented their opponents from finding any kind of offensive rhythm.

Germany did appear content to defend and counter, conceding that they were not going to be able to dominate possession. However, their hard work was undone in the 73rd when Carles Puyol headed in a corner. After the goal, the Germans did come out of their shell, but experienced Spanish defenders didn’t make any mistakes, clearing away Germany’s few half-chances.

The final (Spain-Netherlands) will be contested on Sunday, while the third place match (Germany-Uruguay) is set for Saturday.

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
