Charlie Davies Rehab Holdup

El Salvador v United States

Charlie Davies‘ World Cup hopes appear to have been given quite the blow: the president of Sochaux, Davies’ club, stated Charlie will not play with the club this season.

The striker, who was seriously injured in an October 2009 car accident, had targeted the last two games of the season for his return.

Sports Illustrated’s Ben Lyttleton has a fairly comprehensive rundown, including info on the team’s struggles since Davies’ accident.

What is not addressed is the stake Sochaux has in Davies staying fit. With nothing left to play for in the last two matches (they’re safe from relegation but nowhere near a European cup spot) there’s no reason for Sochaux to risk further injury.

Charlie seems very assured he will be ready for the World Cup. Hopefully, Sochaux are simply being overprotective of their investment.

so are you saying his WC hopes take a hit because he wont be able to play with his club, thus wont be in shape for the WC? Help me out here…

Yes, unfortunately, if he has to spend so much time off the field he will not be able to gain field-play experience, which of course means he won’t be as prepared for the wc, which takes valued international experience away from the team.

Davies does not necessarily have to play for Sochaux to make the US team, but if he doesn’t play for them, Bob Bradley will have a more difficult time judging Davies’ fitness.

Hopefully, Davies will be fit enough to play in the three friendlies the US has scheduled in May and early June, which would enable Bradley to determine whether or not Charlie will make the World Cup squad.
