Clint Dempsey’s Fulham Falls Just Short of European Glory

Atletico Madrid vs FC Fulham

The Europa League final required extra time to find a resolution, an outcome that ended up extinguishing a dream run by Fulham and Clint Dempsey. The London-based club exceeded expectations by making the final, notably using a Dempsey wonder goal to upset European giants Juventus along the way.

The final, pitting Fulham against Atletico Madrid, went beyond the initial 90 minutes after Diego Forlan (32) and Simon Davies (37) supplied the only goals in regulation. Extra time brought heartbreak to many a Londoner when Forlan found the net a second time. His 116th minute strike occurred just 4 minutes before a penalty shootout would have transpired.

Dempsey, who came on as a substitute in the 55th minute, became the first American to play in a European cup final, but he was unable to repeat his super sub performances from earlier in the campaign.
