Day 19 Recap

June 15, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Ivory Coast v Portugal FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group G - Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth, South Africa - 15/6/10..Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo looks dejected.

Paraguay 0 – Japan 0

Penalties: Paraguay 5, Japan 3

Portugal 0 – Spain 1

Two-hundred ten minutes: 1 goal. And the rest of the world wonders why Americans dislike soccer. On the day, Spain’s David Villa was the only attacker capable of removing the goose eggs. His 63rd minute strike sent the Portuguese home, while Paraguay and Japan needed penalties to make up for their offensive futility.

Of the three teams failing to score, Portugal are at the most fault. Japan may have allowed Paraguay to have possession, but at least they came forward in waves. Portugal, failing to utilize perhaps the most explosive player of the past decade, generated less shots than either Japan or Paraguay. Yes, Spain’s prowess requires a defensive mindset, but Portugal rarely sent more than three men out of their own half, a display that justly resulted in a lack of scoring opportunities.

Paraguay and Spain will meet Saturday.

well, let’s hope the paraguay/spain game is much more interesting. though, i must admit, Japan showed some fantastic defense. too bad it meant nothing in the end
