Argentina 0 – Germany 4

Be on the lookout for Ben Koch’s summary later tonight.

Spain 1 – Paraguay 0

It surprisingly took La Furia Roja eighty-three minutes to find the net, but when they did, the identity of the goalscorer was no shock. David Villa, who has scored all but one of Spain’s goals, followed up Pedro’s rebound to secure the victory, though he did need to bounce the ball off both posts to find his fifth tally of the tournament. Before the lone score, the match proceeded as planned: Spain were the aggressors, with Paraguay countering.

One sequence, however, defied prediction. In the 57th, Paraguay were awarded a penalty when center back Pique pulled down striker Oscar Cardozo. Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas was able to stop the shot, and seconds later, Spain had their own chance in the penalty area after Villa was pushed as he headed into a one on one with the goalkeeper. Xabi Alonso put his penalty straight down the middle and was celebrating when the referee called him back – a few Spanish players had entered the penalty area early. Justo Villar was able to stop the ensuing Alonso shot, but Paraguay were unable to hold the clean sheet for the full ninety.

Germany and Spain will meet in the second semifinal on Wednesday.

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
