In a raucous atmosphere in Austria, Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj helped Aston Villa manage a 1-1 draw against Rapid Vienna. Guzan, dodging drinks, lighters, and coins, kept his squad in the match with a number of fine saves. Lichaj, a young right back profiled in our most recent podcast, made his first-team debut for Villa. Unfortunately, Lichaj – in the midst of a shaky first half – was at fault on Vienna’s goal, though he settled down as the match progressed. Both Guzan and Lichaj were on the field for the full 90.
The third gringo to see the pitch today was Jozy Altidore, who picked up 16 minutes of playing time in Villarreal’s 5-0 dismissal of Belarusian club Dnepr-Transmash. Villarreal have spent much of the summer trying to ship Altidore, but perhaps today’s Europea League cameo means he is staying put. Even though the transfer window doesn’t close until the end of August, Altidore will no longer be able to play for other clubs in their Europa League campaigns, as today’s appearance locks him onto Villarreal’s tournament roster.
With Villarreal all but guaranteed to advance, Altidore has a decent shot at starting the next leg, though Aston Villa’s draw may make it difficult for Lichaj and Guzan to do the same.
