Jozy Altidore and Jonathan Spector’s Bad Day

Altidore Seein’ Red

Jozy Altidore’s day went from bad to worse.  Needing a win to progress in their fight to avoid relegation, Altidore’s Hull City saw midfield stalwart Jimmy Bullard miss a tying penalty.  Four minutes later Altidore was given a justifiable red card:

The Sunderland defender made the most of the contact (and it was his ball-throwing that set off Jozy), but no one can expect to get away with a headbutt, no matter how slight.  To make matters worse the automatic three-match ban that accompanies the card likely ends Altidore’s stay with Hull.  There are only two games left in the season and Hull are now unlikely to avoid relegation.  Since Jozy is only on-loan from Spanish club Villareal, he won’t return to the club if they’re relegated.

Spector’s Gaffe

Jonathan Spector, on the other hand, began his day quite miserably but was surely feeling much better when the final whistle blew.  In only the fourth minute Spector gifted Wigan an own-goal.  He appeared to simply lose sight of the ball, but that is a cardinal sin for a defender.

Fortunately, his teammates covered his mistake with 3 goals to give West Ham a 3-2 victory.  Their win, coupled with Hull’s loss, boosts their hopes of staying in the top division.

On Thursday, look for further coverage of gringos in Europe and their fight against relegation.

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
