Earlier today, Eric Lichaj started his 4th-straight match for Leeds United. The Aston Villa right back was loaned to Leeds at the beginning of February, a month after a disappointing outing against Manchester City.

Lichaj’s loan may have been the result of Gerrard Houllier’s search for a scapegoat, but his performance today won’t restore Houllier’s trust. In Leeds’ 3-0 loss to Swansea City (the clubs play in the Championship – England’s 2nd division), Lichaj was one of the defenders responsible for letting in City’s first goal. He struggled to contain left winger Scot Sinclair for the entire match, even earning a yellow card on a late challenge.

Offensively, Lichaj wasn’t any better. He didn’t even complete a pass in Swansea City’s half until the 49th minute. To be fair, he did manufacture a couple productive offensive surges late in the second half. But by that time City was already up a pair of goals and the players had eased off.

Lichaj’s unproductive day wasn’t all his fault, though. Most of his teammates were just as ineffective, and it’s hard for a fullback to push forward when his squad never has possession.

But in order to impress Houllier, Lichaj will have to start producing even when his teammates don’t.

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
