June 23, 2010 - Tshwane/Pretoria, Guateng, South Africa - 23 JUN 2010: Maurice Edu (USA). The United States National Team defeated the Algeria National Team 1-0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane/Pretoria, South Africa in a 2010 FIFA World Cup Group C match.

Position: Center Midfield

Club: Rangers FC (Scotland)

Club Career

Maurice Edu made sure Toronto FC fans would always remember his contributions to the Canadian club’s inaugural 2007 season.  His sterling form led to a Rookie of the Year award and his first goal helped ensure Toronto’s first win.  Unfortunately for those fans, Edu’s play did not go unnoticed by larger teams and his first season in Canada proved to be his last.  Rangers FC of Scotland signed the midfielder in August 2008.

His introductory season at Ranger’s was not quite as illustrious as his debut with Toronto.  In fact, his only extended playing time in 08-09, when he started Rangers’ final 8 games, occurred after Rangers captain Barry Ferguson was suspended for two weeks.  A number of fine performances looked to have locked up a starting role for the next campaign, but a serious knee injury on the last day of the season kept Edu out until December 2009.  Maurice made a successful recovery and has gone on to make notable contributions to his club in 2010, memorably scoring the only goal in Rangers’ victory over archrivals Celtic.

National Team

Edu could end up as the US World Cup starter with the least caps.  Even though he’s not the youngest player in Futbol for Gringos current starting XI, his 12 caps are the least of the projected starters.

The knee injury suffered at Rangers is the main reason for the low number of appearances with the national team.  But even though he’s had limited playing time for the US, Edu’s play has hinted at a productive partnership with midfield cohort Michael Bradley.  Both can handle the heavy defensive load Bob Bradley elects to put on his center midfielders and they’re each capable of venturing forward to help in attack.  If Edu is chosen over some of his more experienced teammates, he will look to replicate his noteworthy club performances and create fond memories of South Africa for US fans.
