Club Career

Like many gifted soccer players, Michael Bradley began his club career as a teenager (link – The great Pele actually won his first World Cup at 17!), first suiting up for MLS’ New York Metrostars (now New York Red Bulls) as a 17-year-old in 2005.   He made the move to a European club, Dutch side SC Heerenven, following just 1 season in MLS.  Three seasons of stellar play, including a US international record 17 goals in one season, rewarded Bradley with a jump to German Bundesliga team Borussia Monchengladbach, where he has continued to develop into a reliable box-to-box midfielder.

National Team History

To understand Michael Bradley’s importance to the national team, all you need know is that even though manager Bob Bradley is his father, there aren’t any outside voices calling to remove Bradley the Younger from the starting lineup.  He has featured in almost every important national team game since 2007.

Bradley has perhaps the most difficult job of any US player.  As one of two center midfielders, he is responsible for defending the middle of the pitch and initiating counterattacks, often covering more ground over the course of the game than any of his teammates. He may be one of the youngest members of Team USA, but he continues to prove that few are more important.

World Cup 2010

In a tournament noted for the preeminence of three-man central midfields, Bradley’s role as a box-to-box midfielder seemed almost archaic. However, he managed to be one of USA’s most effective players and, in one of those box to box runs, scored the tying goal against Slovenia.

When the gringos played with three center mids (Benny Feilhaber and Maurice Edu filling out the trident), Bradley was occasionally the best player on the pitch, and if the USA can ever figure out a way to replicated some type of 4-2-3-1 formation, Bradley has a shot at becoming the best gringo not named Dempsey or Donovan.
