Promotion, Relegation, and Gringos (Fin)

Sports News - May 10, 2010

Manchester United, hoping for an unprecedented fourth straight title, outclassed Stoke City last weekend. Despite their 4-0 victory, United needed to finish top of the table. Chelsea demolished Wigan Athletic 8-0, guaranteeing the London club its first title since 2006.

Below is the final table:

As you can observe from the key, clubs highlighted in green will participate in the Champions League, the dark blue corresponds with the Europa League, and the shameful pink denotes relegation.

Americans finished in 6th (Brad Friedel and Brad Guzan), 8th (Tim Howard and Landon Donovan), 12th (Clint Dempsey), 14th (Stuart Holden), 15th (Marcus Hahnemann), 17th (Jonathan Spector), and 19th (Jozy Altidore).

Elsewhere in Europe

Hannover 96, home of Steve Cherundolo, avoided relegation following a 3-0 victory. Cherundolo will now spend an 8th straight season in Germany’s top flight.

Freddy Adu and Eddie Johnson lost 4-2 and drew 1-1 in their most recent Champions League playoff matches. The results end their shot at first place and mean the club will participate in the Europa League next season.

Johnson injured his hamstring in Wednesday’s draw, but the knock should not hurt his World Cup aspirations.

What’s happened to Freddy Adu? Is he not turning out to be the player they thought he was going to be?

Overall I see Americans (OK, Gringos) gaining momentum abroad. Let’s hope this summer’s theater of the World Cup can be a showcase for even more to get recruited into more visible top leagues. My Argentine father-in-law is impressed with USA’s progress throughout the last few cups, stating that “within the next two world cups they’ll reach a semi.” Let’s hope! I think our best shot at that is more and more international experience and exposure.

In 2006, 12 of the 23 squad members were playing in Europe.

19 of the 30 potential 2010 players are ‘over there.’

I think your father-in-law is a wise man.
