USA – Slovenia Preview

The USA men fell to the Netherlands 2-1 at Amsterdam ArenA, Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

With Algeria the only side in Group C displaying any tactical variety (England will be a bit more strategically diverse if Gareth Barry is fit), Slovenia and the United States are both expected to field a 4-4-2 in tomorrow’s vital clash.

Projected Slovenia Lineup

Slovenia has two twists on the ubiquitous formation: Valter Birsa pinches in from the left flank (somewhat similar to Steven Gerrard) and, of the two strikers, the larger Milivoje Novakovic drops deep to link with the midfield. Other than that, their strategy is fairly typical and not terribly different from USA’s. One center mid – Koren – provides the silk while the other – Radosavljevic – supplies the steel; the wingers occasionally switch flanks; and the fullbacks come forward to support as necessary.

Unlike Bob Bradley’s men, Slovenia tends to pack in the defense even when they’re favored. Tomorrow they may be even more negative than is the norm.

Projected USA Lineup

FFG can only see Bradley considering two changes (Edson Buddle for Robbie Findley and José Torres for Ricardo Clark) but neither is a sure bet. Buddle could fair better against the physical Slovenes, and with the Europeans set to bunker down, Torres’ smooth deliveries might be a necessity. Even if Bradley doesn’t alter the lineup, the US will take more chances going forward than they did against the English.

Knockout Round Scenarios

A win and the US controls its destiny. A draw would not be the end of the world, though the gringos then would need help from England in each of the last two matches. Were the unthinkable to happen, a loss to the Slovenes, USA would need either Algeria or Slovenia to beat England and the US would still have to defeat Algeria by multiple goals in order to make up a negative goal difference.

In other words, they’d better win tomorrow.
