USA’s 2014 World Cup Squad

FFG thinks three of the players in the above picture (from 2005 U-20 World Cup qualifying) will have a chance to make the 2014 squad. Can you pick them out? Their names are somewhere below, along with other players from the current team who will or will not make the squad.

We’ve taken the liberty of listing how old each player will be in 2014.

Retired from International Competition

Steve Cherundolo – 34

Carlos Bocanegra – 35

Jay DeMerit – 34

Marcus Hahnemann – 42

Notes: Hahnemann is unlikely to be playing in 2014 (though with a goalkeeper you never know). The other three could be suiting up in MLS come 2014, but none of them will be able to compete at the international level

Current USMNT members who won’t be in consideration

Herculez Gomez – 32

Clarence Goodson – 32

Edson Buddle – 33

Robbie Findley – 28

Ricardo Clark – 32

DaMarcus Beasley – 32

Notes: Findley’s relative youth may keep him in contention. Everyone else should still be suiting up for a club, though they’ll not be considered for the national team.

Likely contributors

Jonathan Spector – 29

Jonathan Bornstein – 29

Benny Feilhaber – 29

Brad Guzan – 29

Notes: Of these four, Feilhaber has the best shot at seeing the field in 2014. He’ll be especially motivated since the tournament will take place in his native Brazil.

Stars of 2014

Oguchi Onyewu – 32

Michael Bradley – 26

Clint Dempsey – 31

Landon Donovan – 32

Stuart Holden – 28

José Torres – 26

Maurice Edu – 28

Jozy Altidore – 24

Tim Howard – 35

Notes: Donovan, Dempsey, Onyewu, and Howard will all be in the twilight of their careers. Thirty-five is spry for a keeper, so unless Howard decides to retire, he’ll still be the number one. One of the subplots of the next four years will be to see who ages more gracefully – Donovan or Dempsey.

The best players on the 2014 team might be Bradley and Altidore.

Current fringe players who will be in contention

Alejandro Bedoya – 27

Robbie Rogers – 27

Charlie Davies – 28

Freddy Adu – 25

Edgar Castillo – 28

Marvell Wynne – 28

Notes: Adu and Davies are the most exciting names on the list, but Marvell Wynne (right back) may be the best athlete in the whole USMNT pool. Rogers and Bedoya (both wingers) just missed the cut for 2014, and Castillo, with a little more seasoning, might displace Bornstein at left back.

MLS prospects who have a chance to earn a role

Omar Gonzalez – 25

Brek Shea – 24

Jack McInerney – 21

Luis Gil – 20

Emerson Hyndman – 18

Notes: Shea (winger) and Gonzalez (center back) are the only two on the list contributing to their MLS clubs on a game-by-game basis, though McInerney (midfield) has received significant minutes of late.

Emerson Hyndman is an FC Dallas youth player who has been linked with a number of European sides. Emerson is the grandson of current FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman.

Keep an eye on – center back

In 2006, Onyewu was an up and coming defender, but all of the 2010 center backs were established club performers. The youngest center back fighting for a roster spot was Chad Marshal, who was 25. Gonzalez and another defender or two must develop or the 2014 squad will be hurting at the back.

Gringos, did you figure out the three players in the photo? Do you have anyone else in mind who might be a contributor? Will Freddy Adu and JoJo ever get back together?

I know Howard should still be good at goal, but who is his likely replacement? Is there a young goalie out there?

If you had to place a guess, are we going to be better, the same or worse at the next worldcup?

what about Danny Mwanga? he was born in Congo, but has expressed interest in USMNT. We really need some young defenders to make a move up, in short order. our back line looks bad for 2014.
