Video Highlights of Switzerland’s Upset of Spain

June 16, 2010 - Durban, South Africa - epa02205361 Switzerland's Gelson Fernandes celebrates after Switzerland defeated Spain 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2010 group H preliminary round match between Spain and Switzerland at the Durban stadium in Durban, South Africa, 16 June 2010.

Matt Groening’s underlings may not have been taking potshots at Spain, but the broader point they were making – soccer is boring because it’s a lot of huffing and puffing to no end – could have been applied to the Spanish, who spent long sequences spraying the ball around yet failed to penetrate the Swiss defense.

Xavi and Co. are quite capable of magical displays (their last outing was a 7-0 gutting of Poland) and have produced excellent results in the past. In fact, today’s loss was their first since last summer (the USA beat them 2-0 in the 2009 Confederations Cup) and only the second defeat in their last 50 matches.

But their toothless performance begs a question: is Spain’s methodical passing actually boring to watch?

What do you think, gringos?

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
